abesouro.
bumblebee
Meaning & usage
bumblebee
Where this word comes from
From Old Galician-Portuguese abesouro, of unknown origin. Perhaps a composite from Latin avis aurea (“golden bird”) or Latin apēs aureās (“golden bee”), although Coromines finds this far-fetched. Note the similar term in Asturian vaca-lloria (“stag beetle”), which seems to have a pre-Roman origin, and where Coromines suggests possible Proto-Celtic terms *bekkazauro, *bitiauro-, cognate with Old Irish bech (“bee”), coming from a widespread root *be-, *bes- for words relating to bees, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰey-. Cognate with Portuguese besouro (“beetle”).
