ascendancy
Where this word comes from
Pseudo-Latinism, derived from ascendēns (“ascending”) + -ia (“abstract noun suffix”), modelled after Medieval Latin dēscendentia, equivalent to ascendente + -ia. Ascendentia exists as a real word in Latin, but only as a form of the participle ascendēns. Note that Latin does not use ascendentem, the accusative singular of this participle, to refer to an ancestor; words for ancestor in Latin include progenitor (literally “progenitor”) and avus (literally “grandfather”). Cognate with Catalan ascendència, French ascendance, Italian ascendenza, Portuguese ascendência, and Romanian ascendență.
