Meaning & usage
The letter omicron (ὂ μικρόν), the 15th letter of the ancient Greek alphabet.
Where this word comes from
From Phoenician 𐤏 (ʿ, “ʿēn”). The reasoning behind the Greek sound value is unclear. The Phoenician letter derived its name and shape from an eye, which could have been translated into Greek as ὄμμα (ómma) or ὀφθαλμός (ophthalmós), but it is hard to see why this acrophonic name would have been forgotten.
