Meaning & usage
Bulungan (a regency of North Kalimantan, Indonesia)
Where this word comes from
From earlier spellings Bulongan and Bolongan (both have fallen in use and became archaic as of 1980s), from Bulungan bulu tengon (“really a bamboo”). The name itself originated from local legend revolving around Kuwanyi, a tribal chief of Hupan (or Kayan) Dayaks, who found a bamboo and an egg on a woody stump, while he went hunting. The spelling Bulongan was the original one used in government documents such as Emergency Law No. 3/1953, Law No. 27/1959, Government Regulation No. 47/1981, as well as old books such as Monografi Daerah Propinsi Kalimantan Timur (1969) (it's not exactly known when the regency renamed itself).
