Where this word comes from
The modern form may possibly be from English Taiwan or a way older form reminiscent of Dutch Tayouan, perhaps from Siraya. Recorded historically in Dutch as Tayouan (and other variants), and in Hokkien 大員 /大员 (Tāi-oân) (and other variants). The term initially referred to a sandbank peninsula that later silted up now wholly part of the island in the area of modern-day Anping District, Tainan, and eventually became the name of the entire island.
