Where this word comes from
Inherited from East Indies Malay, there are several possibilities: * From Arabic الْأَفُوكَاتَة (al-ʔafūkāta, “avocado”), a variant of أفوكادو. * A corruption of avokad, from Dutch avocado (“avocado”). This may explain the alternative spelling variants, due to textual conflation with advokat (“advocate, attorney”). Ultimately from Latin American Spanish avocado, from the earlier aguacate, which comes from Classical Nahuatl āhuacatl (“avocado”).
