Equivalent to bagi + -an. * The sense “duty” is a semantic loan from English part. * The sense “subdivision” is a semantic loan from Dutch sectie. * The sense “fate” is a semantic loan from Arabic نَصِيب (naṣīb, “destiny”, literally “portion”). The superseded spelling bahagian was used as translation of Japanese 部(ぶ) (bu, “department”) during the Japanese occupation.
