From Arabic إِعْلَان (ʔiʕlān). Coined by Indonesian journalist Soedardjo Tjokrosisworo in 1951 with intention to replace adpertensi (current spelling advertensi). As the pronunciation of syllable-final ⟨k⟩ is ambiguous for many speakers of Indonesian, it triggers the spelling pronunciation with a hard /k/.
