The initial a- in amarah is probably comparable to acara ← cara, which is also derived from either Sankskrit or Persian. Doublet of mara. * Proto-Malayic *(maN-)irah (“red”), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *(ma-)iʀaq (“red”). Doublet of merah. Largely displaced native bengis for the adjective, and amuk for the verb and the noun.
