Inherited from Old Norse kerfi, kjarf (“bundle”). Compare with Middle High German krēbe (“basket”), and Sanskrit ग्रप्स (grapsa, “bundle”). Also perhaps akin to Old Saxon crybb (and ergo to English crib). Cognate with Faroese kervi (“sheaf of sedge, system”), Norwegian Bokmål kjerv (“bundle, sheaf”), Norwegian Nynorsk kjerve and kjerv (“bundle, sheaf”), Swedish kärve (“sheaf”), Danish kærv (“sheaf”).
