Inherited from Old Norse knapi (“valet”) (whence also Danish knabe (“a page”)) which was brought to Iceland from Middle Low German knape as Icelanders were introduced to chivalric romances in the 13th century, from Proto-West Germanic *knabō (whence Old High German knabo, whence German Knabe (“lad”)). Cognate with Dutch knaap (“lad”) and English knave, the latter from Old English cnafa (“boy, servant”).
