Meaning & usage
Ajaccio (the capital and largest city of Corsica, France)
Where this word comes from
Borrowed from Corsican Aiacciu, Old Italian Addiazzo, corresponding to Medieval Latin Adiacium; possibly from Tuscan Italian agghiacciu (“sheep pen”), or from a derivative of Byzantine Greek ἀγαθός (agathós, “good fortune, mooring”) (cf. also Occitan Agde). There are also early 7th century Byzantine sources that mention a settlement Ἀγιάτιον (Agiátion).
