Attested as Andre (and Greek nominative Ανδρας, Andras) in the 10th century and as Andrim (Latin accusative, pointing to a *Andris nominative) in the 6th. It has been proposed to be related to Byzantine Greek ἀνδρεῖος (andreîos, “courageous”), but it could also be from Byzantine Greek ἄντρον (ántron, “cave, grotto”).
