Meaning & usage
a male given name from Germanic, equivalent to English Louis or Lewis
a male given name from Latin, of historical usage, equivalent to English Louis, notably borne by several French monarchs
Where this word comes from
Adaptation of Old French Louis, Looïs, Luis, from Latin Ludovīcus, from Old High German *Hlūtwīg or Frankish *Hlōdowig, from Proto-Germanic *hlūdaz (“loud, famous”) + *wīgą (“battle”). Compare English Louis, Spanish Luis, German Ludwig, Sicilian Luici. Compare the same phono-morphological output also for Parigi (“Paris”), Tamigi (“Thames”), Dionigi (“Dionysius”), artigiano (“artisan”) or parmigiano (“parmesan”), in which the spelling with the "g" was meant to represent the regular Florentine phonological output as a fricative /ʒ/, which was eventually hyper-corrected by Lombard readers as a non-etymological affricate /dʒ/ by analogy the output of Latin -g(i/e)- and -(b/d/g)j- which indeed have their outputs as affricates.
