Where this word comes from
Giovanni Targioni Tozzetti in 1767, in his treatise Alimurgia, o sia Modo di render meno gravi le carestie. A learned compound of Ancient Greek ἄλιμος (álimos, “hunger-relieving”) (from ἀ- (a-, “not”) + λιμός (limós, “hunger”)) + the suffix -urgia (“work, practice”) (from Ancient Greek ἔργον (érgon, “work”)). The term was also constructed by the author as a paronomasia or pun on the Latin alimenta urgentia (literally “urgent food/nourishment”), referring to the use of wild plants during times of famine.
