From carro. A Tuscan adaptation of carrossa, with northern Italian assibilation of earlier carroccia, a derivative of carro with the suffix -occia, -occio (cf. -uccia, -uccio). The middle vowel not being /u/ means it cannot derive from Latin carrūca (which gave French charrue). Compare Sicilian carrozza, Friulian caroce, cf. also Romanian căruță.
