Where this word comes from
Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish یڭیچری (yeñiçeri) (whence Modern Turkish yeniçeri), from یڭی (yeñi, “new”) + چری (çeri, “soldier”). Pietro Della Valle (1586–1652) noted, using the plural form ienghiceri, that this spelling would more accurately reflect the Ottoman Turkish etymon (the corresponding singular would be *ienghicero).
