Of uncertain origin, but traditionally said to be founded by the Pelasgians. Possibly from Ancient Greek ἅλς (háls, “salt, sea”), but the Pelasgian language should have retained the initial s in its source (Proto-Indo-European *sḗh₂l). Also compare the Venetan river name Alsa, which could be related.
