Archaeology suggests the Insubres emerged from a fusion of local Ligurian and Celtic elements in northern Italy, which may mean the name was carried over from a non‑Celtic local language that was later reinterpreted in Latin by analogy to Latin or Greek ethnonyms. Roman folk etymology (from writers such as Livy) interpreted the name as something like Gaulish *Isombres, possibly meaning "lower Umbrians," from Proto-Celtic *en + Umbri; also compare the tribe Ambrones.
