Where this word comes from

According to Prósper, from the monophthongization of earlier *kʷawrtos, itself dissimilated from *kʷaturtos, from Proto-Italic *kʷeturtos. Alternatively, the term has been explained as the result of Proto-Indo-European *kʷetwr̥tós yielding *kʷetwortos, whence *kʷewortos via the dissimilatory loss of *-t-, which developed into *kʷowortos, ultimately contracting into *quōrtos.
