Meaning & usage

  1. blood

    Old-Latin · declension-3 · neuter
Where this word comes from

From Proto-Indo-European *h₁ésh₂r̥ (“blood”). Only attested in Festus. The form assyr seems to be corrupted. Schrijver outright considers the form to be of non-Latin origin on account of the vacillating vocalism and spelling of the geminate -ss-.
