The origin is uncertain. Probably connected with catēna (“chain”). Pokorny derives from Proto-Indo-European *kat- (“to link or weave together”). Martirosyan connects cassis and catēna with Old Armenian ցանց (cʻancʻ, “casting-net”) and derives all from a Mediterranean substrate.
