Where this word comes from
From Archaic Latin ficolos, from Proto-Italic *figelos, itself from *dʰeyǵʰ- + *-elos. De Vaan, writing prior to the discovery of the inscription containing ficolos, suggests a possible derivation from Proto-Italic *fiɣlos, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰiǵʰ-lo-s, from *dʰeyǵʰ-. This theory must now be abandoned on account of the new evidence. By surface analysis, fingō + -ulus.
