Where this word comes from

From Proto-Italic *jungō, from Proto-Indo-European *yunégti ~ *yungénti, from the root *yewg-. The perfect stem must have been innovated, potentially as a replacement for an original PIE root aorist. The participle might have emerged from an earlier pre-form *yugtós, which would then have been modified by the introduction of the nasal from the root, thus becoming *iung-tos. The subsequent lengthening of the u-vowel is a regular phonological development. Compare Latin sānctus.
