Where this word comes from
De Vaan suggests a possible derivation from an unattested verbal stem *makō + -mentum. The verb *mako would itself reflect a zero-grade root present from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂ḱ- (“to raise, increase”), whence also Proto-Celtic *maketi (“to increase”). It is possible that the pre-form *makō had a perfect passive participle *maktos, whence mactus (“glorified, honored”).
