The difference in conjugation is explained by De Vaan, citing Steinbauer 1989, as the result of derivation via the denominal suffix -ō, -āre from some intermediate nominal (such as an unattested noun or adjective *occeps, *occupis), instead of direct composition of the prefix with the base verb. Compare anticipō, nuncupō, participō.
