Uncertain. Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *h₂or-d-, itself from *h₂er-, with a *d-extension that is otherwise unattested for this root, and an ablauting nasal suffix (see -ō). An alternative zero-grade stem *ord-n- may be attested in the derived word ōrnō. The lengthening of the initial *o- to ō- is a secondary development. Within Latin, related to artus (“joint, limb”).
