Where this word comes from
Of uncertain origin; proposed derivations include: * From Proto-Indo-European *pesd- and so cognate with English feist. This would make ae hypercorrect, with the inherited form being *pēdor. * From a Proto-Indo-European root common with Ancient Greek σπίλος (spílos, “spot, fleck”) and Armenian փիծ (pʻic, “dirty, impure”). * Matasović suggests a derivation from Proto-Indo-European *h₂pe-h₂eyd-ōs, itself from *h₂pe- + *h₂eyd- (“to swell”) + *-ōs. The term would have followed a semantic development from something like "pus" to "filth."
