From Proto-Italic *kʷālis, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *kʷeh₂-li-s, from a feminine or collective form of *kʷo- (interrogative, relative stem) (compare quam) plus an l-suffix such as that found in *-lós, or from *kʷ- + *h₂el- (“to grow”) (compare the suffix -ālis, as well as the sense of indolēs, from this root). Cognate with Ancient Greek πηλίκος (pēlíkos).
