Where this word comes from

From re- + pariō (“to give birth”), from Proto-Indo-European *perh₃- (“to produce, beget”). Schrijver explains the sense development as the result of a proposed morphological process whereby athematic verbs (he reconstructs an athematic i-present for the base verb pariō) could undergo thematicization with a corresponding factitive meaning akin to "bring about that one is the object of X." Thus, the sense "to give birth" became "to bring about that something is produced to me," hence "to discover." For another possible example of this derivational mechanism, see amiciō (“to dress, clothe”).
