Uncertain. Pokorny compares Ancient Greek αἱμός (haimós, “thicket”) for Proto-Indo-European *seh₂i-p- (“to cram, fence”), but this is phonetically unlikely. Possibly from an extension of *sh₂ey- (“to bind, fetter”) in any case. Cognate with saepis, saepiō.
