From Proto-Italic *strigtos, from Proto-Indo-European *strig-tó-s, from the root *streyg- (“to shear”). Stringō originated as a merger of a verb from a nasal-infixed *streyg- (“to strip, shear”) and another from *strengʰ- (“to twist, tie”). Even though the participle is formally derived from *streyg- (because of the lack of -n-), its meaning of “tightened, compressed” developed from the second root.
