Where this word comes from

From Proto-Italic *wiā, from Proto-Indo-European *wih₁eh₂-, from *weyh₁- (“to pursue, be strong”). Cognate with Lithuanian vyti (“to pursue”). See also vīs, invītus, invītō, Ancient Greek οἶμος (oîmos), Sanskrit वीथि (vīthi, “row, road”). Alternatively, from Proto-Indo-European *weǵʰyeh₂-, from *weǵʰ- (whence vehō and English way). This hypothesis is rejected by De Vaan.
