Where this word comes from

From Proto-Italic *widēō, itself from the root *weyd- (“to know, see”). The term may derive from a Proto-Indo-European stative *wid-éh₁-yeti (“to see”), However, the LIV considers the term to be a more recent innovation. The perfect form vīdī may reflect a Proto-Indo-European root aorist *wéydt, although it may also continue the root perfect *wóyde.
