Where this word comes from
From the older Danish–Norwegian digraph ⟨Aa⟩, used to represent the long vowel which developed from Old Norse á /ɑː/. The doubling of ⟨a⟩ originally indicated vowel length. In mainland Scandinavian, the vowel became rounded to /ɔː/ and was later raised to /oː/ in many varieties. The Swedish letter ⟨Å⟩ developed graphically by writing the second ⟨a⟩ above the first, where it was eventually reduced to a ring. Norwegian retained ⟨Aa⟩ for several centuries under Danish orthographic influence. ⟨Å⟩ was permitted in Riksmål in 1907 and officially replaced ⟨Aa⟩ in ordinary Norwegian spelling through the spelling reform of 1917.
