Meaning & usage
a continent south of Europe and between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
Where this word comes from
Derived from Latin Āfrica, the substantivized feminine of āfricus (“African”), from Āfer (“African; member of the Afri”) + -icus (“adjectival suffix”). The Latin name originally referred to the region around Carthage in present-day northeastern Tunisia, and subsequently to the Roman province of Africa. It was later extended to the southern coast of the Mediterranean and, by the Middle Ages, to the entire continent. The ultimate origin of the ethnonym Āfrī (“the Afri”) is uncertain. Proposed explanations connect it with a Phoenician word meaning “dust” or Berber ifri meaning “cave”, but neither derivation is established. Compare Danish Afrika, Swedish Afrika, German Afrika, Dutch Afrika and English Africa.
