Where this word comes from
Internationalism, based on Portuguese Angola, from Kimbundu ngola (“king of Ndongo; royal title”). The title has been connected with ngolo (“resistance, strength, vigor”), in the same word family as kukola (“to endure; to be firm or solid”), although the precise historical formation is uncertain. The title was borne by rulers of the kingdom of Ndongo and was interpreted by the Portuguese as the name of the territory. Parallel international adaptations include Norwegian Nynorsk Angola, Danish Angola, Swedish Angola, German Angola, Dutch Angola and English Angola.
