Where this word comes from
Derived from Latin Antarctica, ultimately from Ancient Greek Ἀνταρκτική (Antarktikḗ), the feminine of ἀνταρκτικός (antarktikós, “opposite the Arctic; southern”), from ἀντ- (ant-, “opposite, against”) + ἀρκτικός (arktikós, “Arctic, northern”). The second element is ultimately from ἄρκτος (árktos, “bear; the Great Bear”), referring to the northern constellations. Doublet of Antarktis (“the Antarctic; Antarctica”). The name therefore literally denotes the land opposite the Arctic. The modern geographical name was introduced at an Italian scientific congress in 1840 and first appeared on a map in 1843. Compare German Antarktika, Russian Антарктика (Antarktika) and English Antarctica.
