Derived from Latin Antarctica, a New Latin geographical name from Ancient Greek ἀνταρκτικός (antarktikós, “opposite the Arctic; southern”), from ἀντ- (ant-, “opposite, against”) + ἀρκτικός (arktikós, “Arctic, northern”). The second element is ultimately from ἄρκτος (árktos, “bear; the Great Bear”), referring to the northern constellations. The name therefore literally denotes the region opposite the Arctic.
