Where this word comes from
Internationalism, probably influenced by Danish Antillerne (“the Antilles”), ultimately from Spanish Antillas (“the Antilles”). The Spanish name derives from Antillia, the name of a legendary island in the Atlantic Ocean, also recorded as Antilia, Antilla and Antiglia, which appeared on European maps before the Caribbean islands became known to Europeans. The deeper origin of the island name is disputed. Parallel international adaptations include Norwegian Nynorsk Antillane, Danish Antillerne, Swedish Antillerna, Dutch Antillen, German Antillen and English Antilles (“the Antilles”).
