Inherited from Old Norse *Berubú. The first element is probably an old river name *Bera, used in the genitive singular *Beru; the second is bú (“dwelling, farm”). The river name probably referred to the stream now called Berbubekken. The surname is habitational, from the farm name. First attested in 1312 in a purchase document. Attested as Berabu and Bærabu in 1392, with later spellings including Barbo, Berbo, Barbou and Barboe.
