Meaning & usage
a neighborhood of St. Hanshaugen borough, Oslo, Norway
Where this word comes from
From the older spelling Bislet. The name belonged originally to a løkke (“enclosed suburban property”), known in the seventeenth century as Bisaalit, on the old road between Gamle Aker Church and Frogner. It probably referred to an inn formerly situated there, but the precise lexical origin is uncertain. The name was subsequently transferred from the property to the surrounding neighborhood. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk Bislett (“neighborhood in Oslo”).
