Where this word comes from
Internationalism, based on Latin Bulgaria, a Medieval Latin formation from the ethnonym represented by Bulgarus (“Bulgar”) and -ia (“country-forming suffix”). The country is named after the Bulgars, a Turkic-speaking people who established the first Bulgarian state in the Balkans in the late seventh century. The origin of the ethnonym is disputed. A widespread proposal derives it from Proto-Turkic *bulgar, from *bulga- (“to stir, mix”), perhaps originally meaning “mixed people” or “rebels”, but this interpretation is not universally accepted. Compare Danish Bulgarien, Swedish Bulgarien, German Bulgarien, Dutch Bulgarije, French Bulgarie and English Bulgaria.
