Internationalism, ultimately from Latin Callistō (“Kallisto, a nymph in Greek mythology”), from Ancient Greek Καλλιστώ (Kallistṓ, “Kallisto; the most beautiful one”), from κάλλιστος (kállistos, “most beautiful”) + -ώ (-ṓ). The astronomical name commemorates the mythological Kallisto, a nymph associated with Zeus. The moon was discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610 and probably almost simultaneously by Simon Marius, who proposed the name. Parallel international forms include Danish Callisto, Swedish Callisto, German Kallisto, Dutch Callisto, Finnish Kallisto, Polish Kallisto and English Callisto.
