Meaning & usage
a male given name from Medieval Latin [in turn from Old Persian], equivalent to English Caspar
Where this word comes from
An older spelling variant of Kaspar and Kasper, continuing Medieval Latin Caspar. The name was traditionally assigned to one of the Magi in Western Christianity, although the Magi are not named in the biblical text itself. It is usually explained as ultimately deriving from an Old Persian title meaning “treasurer”, but the precise route into the medieval personal name is uncertain. The spelling Caspar has a longstanding Norwegian tradition, with bearers in Norwegian and Danish–Norwegian society from at least the seventeenth century. Compare Danish Caspar, Swedish Caspar, German Caspar, Dutch Caspar and English Caspar (“male given name”).
