Where this word comes from
Internationalism, borrowed from English Charon (“Charon, Pluto's largest moon”). The astronomical name was proposed by American astronomer James W. Christy after his discovery of the moon in 1978. Christy formed the name partly in reference to Char, the nickname of his wife Charlene, and partly after the mythological Charon, the ferryman of the underworld. The latter association was particularly appropriate for a moon of Pluto, since Hades, the Greek ruler of the underworld, corresponds to the Roman god Pluto. The mythological English name is ultimately from Latin Charōn (“Charon, ferryman of the underworld”), from Ancient Greek Χάρων (Khárōn, “Kharon, ferryman of the underworld”). Parallel international astronomical forms include Danish Charon, Swedish Charon, German Charon, Dutch Charon, French Charon, Polish Charon and Czech Charon.
