Where this word comes from

Inherited from Old Norse Danmǫrk f, from danir (“Danes”) + mǫrk (“borderland, march; country”), literally “the Danes' borderland” or “the Danes' country”. Compare Danish Danmark, Swedish Danmark, Faroese Danmørk and Danmark, Icelandic Danmörk and Old English Denemearc (“Denmark”), whence English Denmark. The second element survives in Norwegian Bokmål mark (“borderland, territory”) and is cognate with English mark (“boundary, borderland”), German Mark (“borderland, march”) and Swedish mark (“land, ground”).
