Internationalism, borrowed from Ancient Greek Δεῖμος (Deîmos, “Deimos, personification of dread and terror”), from Ancient Greek δειμός (deimós, “fear, terror”), from Ancient Greek δέος (déos, “fear, alarm”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European Proto-Indo-European *dwey- (“to fear”). The astronomical sense is named after the mythological Deimos, who accompanies Ares in battle and is closely associated with Fobos. The moon was discovered by Asaph Hall on 11 August 1877 (12 August UTC). The names of Mars's two moons were suggested by Henry George Madan from figures accompanying Ares in Homer's Iliad; Hall preferred Deimos for the outer moon and Phobos for the inner one. Parallel international forms include Danish Deimos, Swedish Deimos, German Deimos, Dutch Deimos, Finnish Deimos, Italian Deimos, Portuguese Deimos and English Deimos.
