Internationalism, based on the European name tradition represented by Latin Aegyptus (“Egypt”), itself from Ancient Greek Αἴγυπτος (Aíguptos, “Egypt”), ultimately from Egyptian ḥwt-kꜣ-ptḥ (“house of the ka of Ptah”). The Egyptian name is formed from ḥwt (“enclosure, temple”), kꜣ (“ka”) and ptḥ (“Ptah”), referring to the temple of Ptah at Memphis. Parallel international adaptations include Danish Egypten, Swedish Egypten, German Ägypten, Dutch Egypte, English Egypt and French Égypte (“Egypt”).

Borrowed from British English Egypt, for various place names in the United Kingdom. The individual British place names arose independently. The origin of the name in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire, is uncertain. A local-history account records a suggestion that early Egyptian travellers, or possibly people historically identified as “gypsies”, settled beside the river and gave the area its name; the nearby Egypt Mill subsequently took its name from the area. This explanation is not securely established. The Glasgow name derives from Egypt Farm, also known locally as Little Egypt, at Dalness Street in Tollcross. The farm is traditionally said to have been named in connection with a member of the farming family who had served as a soldier in Egypt. The surrounding locality subsequently became known as Egypt. The origins of the names in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire and West Yorkshire are not securely documented in the sources checked.

The name of Egypt in Arkansas is traditionally explained as an allusion to the abundance of corn grown in the area, compared with the corn of biblical Egypt. Egypt in Georgia was named after Egypt in reference to the country's fertile soil. Egypt in Pennsylvania, originally called Egypta, was likewise named in reference to the fertile land of ancient Egypt, regarded as the “granary of the world”. Egypt in Wharton County, Texas, was originally called Mercer's Crossing and came to be called Egypt after supplying corn to surrounding settlements during a severe drought. Egypt in Auglaize County, Ohio, is instead reported to have been named after Aegypten (modern Ägypten), a locality in Lower Saxony, Germany, from which the mother of an early settler came. The origins of the names in Indiana, the two Mississippi communities, Belmont County in Ohio, Leon and Montgomery counties in Texas, and Jefferson and Summers counties in West Virginia are not securely documented in the sources checked.
