Where this word comes from
Internationalism, ultimately from Latin Enceladus (“Enceladus, a Giant in Greek mythology”), from Ancient Greek Ἐγκέλαδος (Enkélados, “Enkelados, a Giant in Greek mythology”), from ἐν- (en-, “in, within”) + κέλαδος (kélados, “loud noise, din, clamour”). The first element continues Ancient Greek ἐν (en, “in”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₁én (“in”). The deeper origin of κέλαδος (kélados) is unclear; a connection with Proto-Indo-European *kelh₁- (“to call, shout”) has been proposed, but is considered problematic because the expected Greek vocalism would be different. The astronomical name commemorates the mythological Enkelados, one of the Giants. The moon was discovered by William Herschel on 28 August 1789. His son John Herschel proposed the name Enceladus in his 1847 work Results of Astronomical Observations Made During the Years 1834, 5, 6, 7, 8, at the Cape of Good Hope, as part of a naming scheme drawing on mythological figures associated with Cronus, the Greek counterpart of Saturn. Parallel international forms include Danish Enceladus, Swedish Enceladus, German Enceladus, Dutch Enceladus, Finnish Enceladus, Polish Enceladus and English Enceladus.
